“A man goes home and masturbates his typical fantasy,” writes one 2016 presidential candidate, “A woman on her knees. A woman tied up, a woman abused.”
Sounds par for the course for Robert Milnes, a presidential candidate who writes frankly about masturbating in front of his television set to test whether news reporters are spying on him. But Milnes is not responsible for the above quote. It comes from a candidate much more well-known. In fact, it comes from a leading candidate for the Democratic Party’s 2016 presidential nomination—one who participated in last week’s debate.
In addition, the essay by Vermont’s very own Democratic Socialist Senator chronicles the (purportedly) common female sex fantasy of “being raped by three men simultaneously.” It hatches up an “appealing” headline about a “Girl 12 raped by 14 men,” and nonchalantly mentions a 13 year old girl’s “sex friend.”
As unfortunate as all that sounds, Charles C. W. Cooke of The National Review offers a thoughtful critique of any critics:
Maybe [Sanders] was young and foolish [when he wrote the essay]. Maybe he was a different man back then. Maybe society was unrecognizable and he had bought into all sorts of faddish psychology. Who knows? And frankly, who cares? Sure, the Democratic party would crucify a Republican for the same offense. But they shouldn’t. A society in which people are drummed out of politics for things they wrote 43 years ago is an ugly society indeed.
There are far better reasons to attack Bernie Sanders. For instance, according to The Wall Street Journal, his spending plans will cost taxpayers 18 trillion dollars. Only a small portion of that would get paid back from Sanders’s draconian 90% income tax rate for high wage earners. He plans to enact crippling regulations on American industry to combat global climate change marginally. And oh yeah, he wants to rip up the Bill of Rights and replace the First Amendment with a new amendment restricting the ability of Americans to make campaign donations.
That is outright disturbing. Maybe it’d be better if Sanders just stuck to writing about masturbation and left politics alone.
