Augustus Sol Invictus, a candidate for U.S. Senate in Florida, gave the following remarks, as uploaded on YouTube, upon his defeat in the August 30 Libertarian primary. Transcript of the remarks is re-posted below as found on Invictus’ Facebook page.
[The remarks begin (in italics) with the poem Invictus by William Ernest Henley]
Out of the night that covers me,
Black as the pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever gods may be
For my unconquerable soul.
In the fell clutch of circumstance
I have not winced nor cried aloud.
Under the bludgeonings of chance
My head is bloody, but unbowed.
Beyond this place of wrath and tears
Looms but the Horror of the shade,
And yet the menace of the years
Finds and shall find me unafraid.
It matters not how strait the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll,
I am the master of my fate,
I am the captain of my soul.
Fear not, my friends! For we are at the beginning! Tonight we have lost an election – but the election was never the end goal. This is what our detractors have never understood. In their short-sightedness they have sold their souls to maintain control over the Party. They have, through slander & defamation, through blackmail & blacklisting, won this primary election – and in doing so, they have sacrificed their integrity.
I have insisted on following the virtuous path throughout this campaign. We have told the truth; we have campaigned on the issues; we have stood for what is right; and I now stand proud knowing that our conduct has been ethical, even if it cost us the election. As I have stated repeatedly, history will judge the conduct of both sides of this election; and from the long-term perspective, this campaign has tonight achieved absolute victory.
I would like to point out to you seven reasons this electoral defeat is in reality a victory:
First. We have begun a movement. Yes, enough Floridian Libertarians were convinced by a smear campaign to vote for my opponent to cost us the election. But the number of people who voted for my opponent is still but a miniscule fraction of the support we have gathered throughout the West, from Moscow to Belfast, New York to Los Angeles, Brisbane to Auckland. In the words of Francis Parker Yockey, author of Imperium: “Politics is destined to move into a new realm: the Western nations are gone, and the Western nation is coming.” Our supporters know that such a paradigm shift could never hinge on a single election in any State or country in the West. Which leads me to the second reason this campaign has been a success:
We have the opportunity to show Our Fellow Americans how to act when the chips are down. Many in our movement, after hearing of our defeat, will want to walk away. They will want to quit the Party, and they will want to return to life before the campaign, their cynicism about politics having been confirmed. But this, Brothers & Sisters, this is the moment that your commitment matters most. The campaign lives on. This was never a battle against Paul Stanton: this has always been a war against the Federal Government.
Third. We have proved that the System is so corrupt that peaceful change is impossible. Victory in the general election was always a doomed effort. The Republicans and the Democrats have a stranglehold on this country’s politics that will take no small effort to break. But what comes as a surprise to many is the willingness of Libertarians to eat their own, to self-destruct even when victory is attainable, to resort to the System’s methods even as they complain about the System. If even the third-largest Party in America is willing to stamp out its own revolutionaries rather than help them to get elected, what does this say about the possibility of peaceful change in America?
Fourth. We have moved the Overton Window by our own might. Literal revolution is now being talked about from coast-to-coast – not just in whispers in living rooms, but out in the bars, on the airwaves, on blogs & podcasts. People tired of being sold out by the Bernie Sanders of the world are coming to realize that compromise with this System is impossible. One day the American people must respond to the Federal Government’s program of oppression, robbery, and murder. And we, my friends, can justly take credit for bringing awareness to that fact.
Fifth. We have united many disparate groups beneath the banner of the Eagle, Wreath, & Fasces. Classical Liberals & the Alt-Right; anarcho-capitalists & traditionalists; Christians & Pagans; strippers & priestesses; professors & blue-collar workers; secessionists & federalists: all have come together to support a campaign doomed to failure in this election. And why? Because we have named the true enemies of the American people: the Federal Government and the special interests controlling it.
Sixth. We have brought a new culture to the public eye. Leaving revolution aside, my religion of Thelema has hit the worldwide mainstream media for the first time in history. Paganism, black metal, trap music, psychedelics, Nietzsche: these are things that the average American has never even heard of, let alone experienced. And somewhere out there, a thirteen-year-old boy has learned of these things – and I hope that in twenty years he will do as I have done.
Seventh. We have maintained our integrity. Our opposition has won this election, not because they had ideas or vision or even character; not because they have a genuine desire to challenge the corruption of the System; but because they resorted to the most dastardly of tactics to ensure that the Libertarian Party became just like the Republican and Democratic Parties.
The former Chairman of our Party tried to blackmail me personally – twice – before resigning his position and going to the media with a laundry list of vile slanders he hoped would end me.
A certain faction of the Libertarian Party of Florida tried to have me expelled from the Party because of those slanders.
Having failed to do this, a member of the Executive Committee went rogue and published a slanderous press release that I still must combat to this very day – because the Executive Committee has never seen fit to correct this egregious error.
This same faction has waged a smear campaign against me in the media, on the internet, and in county affiliate meetings for a year and a half, accusing me of white supremacy, devil worship, and even murder.
The mainstream media has had a field day with the accusations coming from within our own Party.
The left-wing “journalists” have wet themselves with excitement in being able to drag a right-wing politician through the mud with sensational tales matched only by Scheherazade and the Marquis de Sade.
Communists tried to assassinate me; had me expelled from Canada; attempted to shut down our events from Miami to Vancouver.
Four people closer to me than to anyone committed outright treason against this campaign, having committed a series of the greatest betrayals I have ever suffered in my life.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation sent an informant to infiltrate our campaign for “intel” – and that is just the one that we know of.
The leadership of the National Libertarian Party deliberately buried our campaign, even while they hypocritically railed against the corruption in the Democratic Party when its leadership buried Bernie Sanders’ campaign.
The supporters of my opponent praised him for avoiding a debate at all costs, even while they hypocritically railed against the Republicans and Democrats for keeping Gary Johnson out of the presidential debates.
And my opponent himself? He is nothing. He was merely a pawn this entire time, a puppet that a hateful yet powerful faction of the Libertarian Party used in an effort to thwart our campaign and block my nomination. Neither did he ever deny that this was his role and the main goal of his campaign.
Should it come as a surprise, then, that we have lost this election? I think the surprising thing is that we were able to mount such a spectacular offensive that my opponent has literally been in hiding for two weeks. With all of these obstacles, attacks, and betrayals, the vigor of our campaign has been an absolute miracle.
And this is not over. Brothers & Sisters, I tell you that we are at the beginning. Hold your heads high, and prepare for the coming fight. Let fools gloat over a fool’s victory: we are now free to face our true enemies.
May the Goddess bless our campaign, and may God bless the United States of America.
